  • Weight gain : Eating too much sugar can cause obesity in children. Sugar contains calories, and if children consume too much sugar, they may consume more calories than their bodies need. This can lead to weight gain and eventually obesity.

Being overweight in children (and adults) is dangerous because it increases the risk of certain diseases and can cause low self-esteem. Once a child is overweight, it is often difficult to lose this weight again. Research shows that overweight children in most cases also become overweight adults.

  • Hyperactivity : There is some evidence that sugar can lead to hyperactivity and behavioral problems in some children. However, this is not the case for all children.

  • Diabetes : Excessive consumption of sugar may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes in some children. This is because the body of some children is not able to process the sugar properly and often getting a lot of sugars causes insulin (the substance that ensures that sugars are properly regulated) to become less sensitive. This can lead to diabetes.

To limit the effect of sugar on children, it is important that they eat a healthy and balanced diet and limit their sugar intake to recommended levels. For example, the American Heart Association recommends that children ages 2-18 consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar per day.
